Project Karearea

Vision:
Members of the Clyde Community agree that Clyde needs an iconic image/ sculpture that will be unique and recognisable. This sculpture would enhance the hilltop entry down into Clyde with a fresh, new look.
The Sculpture chosen is the Karearea (NZ’s native Falcon) which is also represented on ‘Central Otago’s World of Difference’, regional vision.

Site Position and Approval:
The sculpture will be positioned on ‘Contact Energy’ Land which has a large adjacent carpark, a safe area for people to stop, explore and take photos of the sculpture. The site is on a large grassy mound between the highway and the side road leading down to the Dairy Creek boat ramp.
We have been given verbal approval for a “Licence to Occupy”, with a proviso the sculpture and surrounding area is upkept.

Project Details:
The Karearea is to be constructed out of recycled material, fixed onto an 8m Air dried Blue Gum log.
The plinth will be set 2metres into the ground with tons of concrete for its foundation, and the Sculpture will reach a height of 5.5metres. This will allow the sculpture to be unique in its form as a flying bird with a 5metre wingspan, and more natural looking for the talons to grasp the log. The Sculptor’s Engineer’s Producer statement will outline the stability and strength of the works for placement on the site.

Artist Bio:
Dan Kelly, a well-known Glenorchy sculptor and multi-faceted designer with an expansive 30 year career has designed the work. His fascination with the great birds of NZ has been transformed into a number of majestic and striking metal sculptures made of recycled materials. Some of these can be viewed at Bob’s Cove and https:/www.dankellysculpture.nz

Cost and Funding:
The total cost of the project: $74,000 incl GST
$65,000 construction and engineering
$9,000 installation
